What's Happening at FFVP Schools

  • Hackett Elementary school in Beloit is thrilled to have the FFVP, according to Principal Thomas Johnson. Each Tuesday-Thursday the school highlights the vegetable or fruit on their morning show.Video Mr. Johnson and staff along with selected students provide nutrition and fun facts about each f/v snack served that day. The morning show is televised and delivered to every classroom each morning with their morning announcements. He also visits classes regularly and noted one fourth grade class making a similarities/differences chart on various red peppers and was pleasantly surprised to see how much the students were engaged and enjoying their pepper snacks.
  • Green Bay schools offered "Kiwi-Cups" that their students enjoyed to the fullest! Each kiwi was cut in half and students used a spoon to scoop out the insides! The students LOVED the exotic fruit!
  • Bayfield Elementary School students went and picked 830 pounds of fresh blueberries! It was such a success that the Family and Consumer Education class is now learning how to freeze the extra blueberries to be used in the breakfast and lunch programs later in the year!
  • Longfellow Elementary in Eau Claire staff has witnessed additional healthy changes in their school as a result of the FFVP. A second grade teacher happily shared that on the day students bring their own snacks, Fridays, over half the class brought a fresh fruit or vegetable. This had never ever happened prior to participating in the FFVP.
  • Falk Elementary, Madison, is working with Wisconsin Homegrown Lunch and the Willy Street Co-op for supplying, preparing, and distributing the fresh fruit and vegetable snack. In addition, AmeriCorps volunteers and UW Extension are contributing fun nutrition activities to the classrooms.
  • Lone Rock Elementary students, in the River Valley School District, are encouraged to 'Fuel up with Fruits and Veggies' as part of their overall daily nutrition with the school's launch of their 'Fuel Up With Fruits and Veggies' snack program. Students can choose a small variety of fresh fruits and vegetables from a fruit/vegetable cart. As a result of the growing enthusiasm, students are now encouraged to bring in their favorite fresh fruit or vegetable for classroom celebrations, such as birthdays.
