Gaining Early Awareness & Readiness for Undergraduate Programs
(GEAR UP)

Program Description: The Wisconsin middle and high school Gaining Early Awareness & Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) provide for a long-term early intervention to enable students and families, beginning in the sixth grade, to learn about and plan for college over a period of years. The GEAR UP concept is to reach students and their parents early, in greater numbers, with accurate information about academic and financial demands and expectations of college. These programs plan to give low-income students high expectations and encourage them to stay in school, study hard, obtain a high school diploma, and enroll in college.

Who is Eligible to Apply: Students in 6th to 12th grades from 54 targeted priority schools and 2 cohort elementary schools in Wisconsin who meet the criteria of low-income, disadvantaged students as determined by the USDA income guidelines for free and reduced meals.
