Application Directions for Add-On Vocational License

This application is for educators who:

  • Have completed an approved educator preparation program in one or more of the following areas: business education, marketing education, family and consumer education, or technology education and wish to add on a vocational license in one or more of these areas.
  • Hold a Tier II license and are seeking to add on a license in one of the vocational areas noted above. Note: Family and consumer education and technology education educator preparation program completers must also hold the specific related license (1210 or 1220, respectively).

  • Have verifiable work experience as follows:
    • 4,000 hours for marketing education.
    • 2,000 hours for business education, family and consumer education, or technology education. Note: for family and consumer education and technology education 1,000 of the hours must be in the specific area of the license being ought.
  • Demonstrate competency in principles, issues, or philosophy of vocational education, including completion of a course in organization and administration of cooperative education programs.

How to Apply for an Experience-Based Technical and Vocation Education Subjects License

1. Determine if you must submit fingerprints

2. Gather Documents

Scan all documentation into files (.pdf, .doc/docx, .jpg/jpeg, or .txt) that are 2MB or less in size

  • Preview the ELO Conduct & Competency Questions to see if you will need to provide documentation of any alleged misconduct.
     
  • Original transcripts verifying completion of a course demonstrating competency in principles, issues, or philosophy of vocational education. Examples of course titles include Organizations and Administration of Vocational Cooperating Programs and Principles of Vocational Education.
     
  • Documents that verify work experience. The following items are options to verify hours of work experience:
    • Work experience verified by employer(s) via a letter. If using a letter from the employer(s) the letter must:
      • Be on company letterhead and signed by the employer or human resources department who is in a position to authorize your hours;
      • Contain total hours worked per year along with the dates of employment;
      • Include a description of job duties performed at each workplace;
      • Include your Job Title(s); and
      • Contain your Workplace Name(s).
    • Work experience verified by W-2 or pay stubs. This is only accepted if your employer is no longer in business. In the event W-2 or pay stubs are used you will need to also supply the following information:
      • Total hours worked per year along with the dates of employment;
      • A description of job duties performed at each workplace;
      • Your Job Title(s); and
      • Your Workplace Name(s).
    • Graduate credits in a technical subject specifically related to the vocational subject for the license sought. If using this option, you are required to provide original transcripts from the accredited college or university where the graduate credits were taken.
    • Attendance at workshop specifically related to the vocational subject for license sought. If using this option, you must provide a course description and agenda outlining the topics covered along with verification of completion (e.g. certificate or letter from the workshop sponsor).
    • Occupational internship completed for baccalaureate or post-baccalaureate credit and approved by the state superintendent with a verification letter provided to you from your educator preparation program.

3. Log in to Educator Licensing Online (ELO)

  • Within ELO, make sure you have answered the three onboarding questions.
  • Find the APPLY FOR A NEW LICENSE section of the Quick Start Menu. Select the same choices in the three drop-down in the application screenshot:

  • Click the “GO!” button.
  • Complete each page of the application as instructed. Review your Application Summary and edit information if necessary OR click the “SUBMIT” button to submit your application.

4. Receive Email Confirmation

 

5. Complete Application on ELO

  • Click the GO! button next to “Submit C&C and Payment to Complete Application.”
  • Review your fees.
  • Complete the Conduct and Competency Questionnaire (14 questions).
