Show Your Support for LGBTQ Youth this Pride Month

As we recognize Pride Month, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction reminds educators and staff of the many ways we can support LGBTQ youth. One simple but meaningful way is to display an Out for Safe Schools badge, which sends a subtle but crucial message: “You can talk to me.” Those who wear the badges may not have all the answers, but they have self-identified as willing to listen and talk and, if needed, to find resources. Those who wear the badges may or may not realize that little sign is a beacon to LGBTQ+ youth. A little sign that stands out to them in what can be a sea of uncertainty around who will accept them and who is on their side. It only takes one trusted adult to make a difference. According to the Trevor Project, the presence of one trusted adult in the life of an LGBTQ+ young person reduced suicide attempts by 40 percent in the last year.

As of June of 2026, educators across the state have requested over 10,000 Out for Safe Schools badges since 2019. Despite some slower years during the COVID pandemic, interest in the badges continues to build. Requests range from 250 badges for one district to a lone badge for someone who feels they are the only one in their district who will wear one. A new trend is educators requesting a badge because theirs has worn out from a few years of wear.
