Published Data: Kindergarten Program and High School Block Schedule Data

Why Kindergarten Data?

Kindergarten data used to be collected on a paper form called the PI-1203, pursuant to Wis. Stat. § 115.30. This collected data is now made available to the public in two ways: one is this webpage, and the other is the School Directory Public Portal. School Directory has replaced the need for many paper form collections.

Besides statutory regulations, DPI publishes data for the benefit of anyone who would like to know this information about our Wisconsin schools. Historically, when 5-year-old kindergarten was the youngest grade in school, districts had the authority to offer either or both full or half-day 5K. In 2000-01, about 100 districts offered both full and half-day. However, by 2021-22 that number was down to 6 districts. So, for parents in particular, there was much value for DPI to publish the list of districts offering both types to assist in their selecting a possible school district in which to live.

This data is useful to demonstrate how the offering of half-day 5K has changed.

Public Kindergarten Full/Half Day Program (PKD)

Wisconsin school districts have the option to provide either or both half-day, full-day kindergarten. Based on data submitted in the School Directory application, the Excel files listed below provide the names of the public school districts and which type of kindergarten program was offered.

Public Kindergarten 4 Year Old Program (PKY)

Many Wisconsin school districts provide kindergarten to 4 year olds. Based on data submitted in the School Directory application, the Excel files listed below provide the names of the public school districts that provided a 4-year-old kindergarten program in addition to their regular full or half day (5K) kindergarten program.

Public High School Block Schedule (PBS)

Wisconsin school districts vary in the type of program schedule provided at the high school. This report lists whether the district provides block, modified block, or traditional schedules.

Starting with the school year 2004-2005 file, additional combinations of scheduled were available.

Based on data submitted in the School Directory application, the Excel files listed below indicate which program schedule type/s were used:
