Conference Theme: Building a WISE Community to Connect, Modernize, and Collaborate

artifact

Our 2026 WISEdata Conference theme is "Building a WISE Community to Connect, Modernize, and Collaborate."

The theme focuses on fostering stronger connections between LEAs, CESAs, DPI, and other agencies with which we integrate. A sub-focus of this includes thinking about ways we can share data securely and efficiently between entities and new ways to integrate systems to save more time for LEA staff.

We are planning to:

  • expand our SIS vendor participation in sessions and networking opportunities by Edtech partners
  • provide networking opportunities and sessions by LEA size to match users who have similar perspectives
  • help each other troubleshoot and establish best practices, including around pressing data and security topics
  • work in partnership pairings or small groups, round table sessions, workshops to:
    • facilitate strengthening of existing relationships
    • develop new connections around reporting the best data possible
    • maximize the use of data to help students, staff, and families
    • hear first-hand ideas for enhancements and ways we can modernize our applications and assistance to better support our LEAs

Keynote: Reducing Chronic Absenteeism

Description

Chronic absenteeism is often referred to as a problem hidden in plain sight, particularly for students from historically disenfranchised backgrounds. Recently, more communities around the United States have been intentional on improving student attendance and limiting the impact of chronic absenteeism. COVID-19 exacerbated attendance issues and schools were left struggling to respond. This talk highlights some successful strategies that schools and communities have used to address and reduce chronic absenteeism.

Each consortium district member is responsible for reporting these schools for their district, so it’s important to know the ins and outs of what to do. Moving from Data to Decisions - WISExplore (optional continuation in Session 4)

Description

Collecting data is only the first step — what truly matters is what we do with it.

In this interactive session, participants will explore a practical Data Inquiry Process for transforming a variety of information into meaningful decisions. Using examples from WISEdash and real district scenarios, we’ll examine student performance data, program and service data, and adult practice data (such as classroom observations, collaborative team practices, professional learning, and leadership team observations). Participants will learn how to identify patterns, generate questions, and connect findings to next steps that support both student and adult growth.

Participants will:

  • understand a clear, repeatable data inquiry process to guide decision-making.
  • practice interpreting and questioning data using sample WISEdash visuals and other tools.
  • identify ways to connect findings to decisions about practices, programming, services, and instruction.
  • leave with strategies and tools to bring structured data conversations to their teams.

This session focuses on data interpretation and decision-making, not data entry or reporting. Participants will leave with a clear framework and practical tools to facilitate productive data conversations in their own schools or districts.

There’s a cartoon of an adult shoveling the steps to get in to a school. A student in a wheelchair asks if the ramp can please get shoveled. The adult answers that the stairs will get cleared first because many students need to use the stairs and only one student needs the ramp. The student then replies, “But if you shovel the ramp, we can all get in.” With this mindset, let’s share our knowledge about webpage accessibility. The session goal is two-fold: to inform of schools' responsibilities under Section 508 and ADA and to inspire the building of websites that allow all of us to ‘get in.’

Privacy is More Than Compliance

Privacy is more important now than ever before. Students, faculty, staff, and families are aware of their privacy rights – and the implications when it goes wrong. Mishandling data, breaches, or violations of privacy law can have real and immediate impacts on institutional reputations. The U.S. Department of Education’s Privacy Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) will discuss the ins and outs of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), how it protects student privacy, and how it applies to institutions’ data and practices. Using best practices and cautionary examples from the field, PTAC will highlight why effective institutional privacy programs must extend beyond cybersecurity, underscoring that student privacy is more than compliance; it lies at the very heart of it all.

Moving from Data to Decisions - WISExplore | 1:00 - 1:50 p.m. (optional continuation 2:00 - 2:50 p.m.)

The conference's primary goal is twofold:

  • to listen to the reporting, analysis, and data usage needs of its attendees (e.g., school districts, public and Choice schools, and CESAs), and
  • to provide sessions during the conference that address those needs.
