Educational Interpreter Renewal Requirements under PI 34.086
EIPA Score Changes:
Effective July 1, 2020, the passing score on the EIPA performance assessment for renewal of an educational interpreter license is 3.5
Applications for renewal can be submitted as early as January of the year the license is due to expire.
An educational interpreter license may be renewed if the licensee meets one of the cited components in both parts one and two:
- The licensee completes one of the following educational components:
- Completes 5 semester credits of continuing professional education from an accredited college or university. (Up to two of the semester credits can be obtained by serving as a mentor to a student currently participating in an interpreter training program who is working to complete their 150-hour practicum. 75 hours = 1 credit)
- Completes 7.5 continuing education units (CEUs) approved by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or Board for Evaluation of Interpreters. (Up to 3 CEUs can be obtained by serving as a mentor to a student currently participating in an interpreter training program who is working to complete their 150-hour practicum. 50 hours = 1 CEU)
Note: You cannot submit a combination of CEUs and credits
2. The licensee does one of the following skill verification components:
- Passes the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) with a renewal score of 3.5. *Effective June 1, 2020, if an educational interpreter has obtained a score of 3.5 or higher on the EIPA, they do not need to satisfy the requirements under #2.
- Obtains or maintains one of the licenses or certifications listed below:
- A sign language interpreter license issued by the Wisconsin department of safety and professional services as approved by the state superintendent

Certifications from National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)

National Interpreter Certification
- Registry for interpreters for the deaf K-12
- Certificate of Interpretation and certification of transliteration
- Comprehensive skills certificate
- Certified deaf interpreter or deaf interpreter
- A basic, advanced, or master certification from the Board Evaluation of Interpreters
- Certification from an organization approved by the State Superintendent in consultation with the State Superintendent's advisory council on deaf and hard of hearing programs

Note: Assessments, including the EIPA, do NOT count as a credit/CEU
If you have not completed all renewal requirements at the time your license is due to expire, you may request a one-year non-renewable extension
Directions for renewing other types of licenses
1. Determine if you must submit fingerprints
- Use the fingerprint decision tree to determine if this step is needed. If you have determined that you need fingerprints, submit them electronically via our vendor Fieldprint by following the Electronic Fingerprint Submission directions.
2. Gather Documents
Scan all documentation into files (.pdf, .doc/docx, .jpg/jpeg, or .txt) that are 2MB or less in size
- Transcripts verifying completion of five semester credits of professional education from an accredited college or university
- Mentoring documentation verifying mentoring hours earned
- EIPA performance score report verifying passing score
- Verification of a valid certificate from one of the organizations listed under alternative eligibility
- Preview the ELO Conduct & Competency Questions to see if you will need to provide documentation of any alleged misconduct
3. Log in to Educator Licensing Online (ELO)
- Within ELO, make sure you have answered the three onboarding questions.

Go to the "Manage your license information" section and choose the "Request License Action [6090]" transaction from the drop-down menu next to your current license.
4. Receive Email Confirmation
5. Complete Application on ELO
- Click the GO! button next to “Submit C&C and Payment to Complete Application.”
- Review your fees.
- Complete the Conduct and Competency Questionnaire (14 questions).
